Makin Dat Money

Throughout the story "Looking for Work", by Gary Soto; I begun to realize similarities between the author and I. He states that while he was a child he had the desire to get rich. I myself had these same goals in mind. Although i didn't go around to neighbors homes asking if they needed yard work done. Seeing as how that's what my chores consisted of, things such as mowing the lawn, pulling weeds. Keep in mind, this was all done with no allowence. However, I was fortunate enough to live on a golf course. Your probably wondering how a little girl was going to make money living on a golf course.. Ha Ha well the easiest way possible. My sister and i would go on these gnarly golf ball hunts through the biggest freaking weeds and bushes. We found tons and tons of golf balls. You can make bank selling used golfballs for a couple quarters along with ice cold lemonade to all the golfers. Wow, that was totally off the subject, but i was just trying to compare myself to the story.
The part when it talks about how he desired to have the so called perfect family, was interesting. After my parents got divorced i sort of envied some of my friends families. It was embaressing for me to first tell them that my dad had moved out. Weird, it's sucha commen thing now-a-days.

In referrence to the 1950's story, I can see why some people would want to grow up in the 50's as oppose to others desiring to relive the 70's and 80's. I personlly wish i could experience a little bit of each. Their are things that appeal to me from each era. In one part it talks about how modern mothers place their parents in homes instead of taking care of them. i think this statement steriotypes current mothers. I think every situation is different. But overall the stories were both really interesting. I like the difference between both the authors. The first story was told from memory of his childhood, the second was based off facts, research and statistics. Overall though i like the first one best. You can understand the lifestyle he grew up in and his surrondings.

  2. Hello Aly girl! how are you?

I just read your comments on the essays and I do agree with you the first essay was more interesting than Coontz "What We Really Miss About the 1950's" Now, you got off the subject there for a bit but, no worries because it was funny! hey! have a good one and see you in class!

  3. Aly, I really like your little story. I think that all young children look for work, want to earn money of their own and find interesting ways to find jobs. I too liked the first story better than the second one, because it is one that I can really relate to. The way he jumps off of one thought into another, that is sort of my kind of thinking.

  4. I think at some point most kids want to be rich. I'm 27 and I still want to be rich. I didn't go hunting for work at my neighbors either, but I did work a little for my uncle in my teens.
